Canada Class Year 3

March 2023

 

In English we have been looking at playscripts. We have written our own adapted version of a playscript and have been working in groups to rehearse and perform them to the rest of the class.  

  

This half term in Maths, we have been looking at fractions. After Easter we will be moving on to look at statistics, shape and measurement. 

  

In Science, we have been learning about Rocks and Soils. We learnt all about the different types of rocks and how fossils are made. We are looking forward to learning about Plants after the Easter holiday.  

  

This half term in History, we have been learning about the Romans. We have learnt about who the Romans were and when they invaded Britain as well as some of the things they have done for us such as building roads and why they built Hadrian’s Wall. In the Summer term, we are looking forward to learning all about Rainforests in Geography. 

February 2023

In English we have reading been reading Escape from Pompeii. First, we wrote our own version of the story and then this week wrote a newspaper report about all the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, using the story as inspiration. 

 

This half term in Maths, we have been looking at multiplication and division. We have now moved on to learning about money, which we will be continuing with after half term. 

 

In Science, we have been learning about Forces and Magnets. We learnt all about friction, how magnets work and what makes different materials magnetic. We are looking forward to learning about Rocks and Soils after half term. 

 

This half term in History, we have been learning about the Iron Age. We learnt that the Celts lived in roundhouses inside a hillfort. Their houses only had one room with a fire in the middle that they used for cooking and to keep warm. We learnt that they grew their own crops and kept farm animals too. Our favourite bit was learning about the hillforts and roundhouses, we looked at some maps to see if we could find the locations of any Iron Age hillforts, it was really interesting. We are looking forward to learning all about the Romans next half term.  

DECEMBER 2022

In English, we have been reading Stone Age Boy. We then wrote our own stories based on the book to produce our longest piece of writing so far in Year 3!

 

In Maths, we have continued to look at addition and subtraction. We are now much more confident in using the formal column methods for addition and subtraction. We have also been enjoying learning our 4 times tables using our new times table strategy. 

 

In History,  we have continued learning about the Stone Age. We have learnt about what life was like in the Stone Age including looking at some cave art. We then enjoyed producing some of our own style cave art in our sketchbooks. We are looking forward to learning about the next part of History (the Romans) in the Spring term.

NOVEMBER 2022

In English, we have been reading How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth and looking at instructions. We are now writing up our own set of instructions for washing a woolly mammoth. This will be the next piece of writing for our Wonder Wall.

In Maths, we have been continuing to look at addition and subtraction and this week we have been learning the formal written method of column addition. We have also been enjoying learning our 2 times tables using our new times table strategy. 

In History,  we have started our new topic learning about the Stone Age. We have learnt that the Stone Age period can be split into 3 different time periods called the Mesolithic, Neolithic and Palaeolithic. Last week, we also had our first Now, Press, Play experience where we took part in an interactive story all about the Stone Age. We really enjoyed it and look forward to using it again later in the year with some of our other topics.

OCTOBER 2022

In English we have been reading Fantastic Mr Fox. We are now writing our own stories based on this using Resilient Mr Rabbit as our main character. This will be written up in neat for our Wonder Wall before half term.

In Maths, we are currently looking at addition and subtraction. We have also been enjoying learning our 5 times tables using our new times table strategy. 

In science, we have been learning about Light this half term. We have learnt about natural and man-made sources of light, how mirrors work and all about shadows.
